Kim made origami style cranes

Kim's son went to Japan with the Scouts for a World Jamboree.  So the cranes became this cushion cocver...

Kim found Tokyo map fabric and put some on the back.  This cushion was made for her son's group leader and well received - so I should think!

Janet made a string quilt - narrow strips of fabric are called strings.  They can be paper pieced, foundation pieced, pieced freehand, however you like and depending on the end result you wish to achieve.  They can be a good, thrifty way of using up otherwise useless pieces of fabric.

 Well the holidays and the summer really got away from me this year so rather a lot of pics to work through.....

I think this is Steph hiding behind this 9 patch variation.  If not, someone please let me know! 9 patches are 3 squares in a row and 3 rows in a block.  You can totally change the look of them depending of what fabrics you use, or by cutting the finished block up in various ways which gives you a different look.

A wedding present made by Steph.  There is lace over the pink fabric and the block design is a variation on a double wedding ring....

Rosemary's Hexagons.  Lots of unpicking and changing of mind, but the end result is rather cute

Sian made this Grandmother's Fan Quilt - isn't it fab? This particular version was foundation pieced.  You can make one using dresden plate fans eg http://seven-stitches.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/grandmothers-fan-tutorial.html  or you can use a pieced version using Quilter's Cache free patterns here http://www.quilterscache.com/G/GrandmothersFanBlock.html.
Or you could use a foundation pieced set (ie pattern printed onto fabric and you sew your pieces of fabric onto the printed background).  Lots of different ways to do it and plenty of different settings.  A setting is how the blocks are put together.  Sian has chosen to keep them all in the same orientation, as you can see.

Sian also chose to make this version of a log cabin which she has called Lightning Logs.  I think this may be a winter project for quilting.  I am sure I have a more up to date photo somewhere but as I said, I have rather too many pics to sort through.  When I find it, I will post it.....Much nicer in reality than in this pic.

OK, we have had a lovely visit to Malvern Quilt show to see the quilts, purchase the fabric, wadding and whatnots. And I am going on holiday tomorrow, to Lanzarote.  I am really looking forward to it.  So I am hastily putting up the last lot of pics I have until I get home again and back to Breakaways.

Kim has been doing a paper pieced pattern.  I think it may be from a German pattern.  Anyway, she is very precise and an excellent seamstress and this is the latest block finished, before trimming.  It is beautiful.

Steph's daughter was in a play and she had to hastily cannibalise a dress in a suitable manner.  Looking good, don't you think?

Steph is making something for a friend.  I don't know if they know about it so here is a tiny little bit of satin and lace....

And this is a tada moment for Helen.  Her first log cabin block, pretty small, pieced by hand.  She has 3 more to go, but may choose to intersperse making them with another block, just for a change.
