Melody Johnson is a fibre artist.  I have always loved her extremely colourful quilts and seen some at the FoQ in Birmingham in the past. Her technique of choice has been fusing in the past though I think she has now gone back to piecing as well, as a sort of challenge to herself. I don't generally cross contemporary quilt stuff with the Breakaways but anyway... Christine Restall has been a staunch supporter  of our contemporary group - South Coast Contemporary Quilt Group.  She makes fabulous work and exhibits with various groups, notably 'By Design' which had an exhibition at the Festival of Quilts and is currently exhibiting at the Quilt Museum and Gallery in York.

At our last meeting for October we were a little thin on the ground as it was half term and many were away or had the dreaded sniffles as a nice present from children.  Plenty to look at though! Libby showed us something last week.  Some of us did know how to do it but for those who didn't here is a tutorial from Delaware Quilts.  Libby's blocks were quite big and you could make a quilt very quickly using this method.  I think this method was used on one of the original BQL bag challenges run by Kandy Newton. My friend, Jane, beloved of many but particularly by her husband, Gary Pritchard, and children Sam and Charlie Blythe and Toby and Elsie May.  Jane had such a generous heart, a fabulous wife and mum.  She died  suddenly recently, aged 42 and there is a service at church on Monday.  We didn't see each other much but I will miss her dreadfully. Sorry for long gap - my friend Chris and I went to the Festival of Quilts for a few days; enjoyed ourselves (though not the weather as we got rather wet getting from car park to halls) and saw many quilts, spent far too much money etc, in common with many others.   Highlights were talking to a lady who works at a school and was involved with the making of a quilt which was hanging in the schools

My brothers worked very hard to organise what proved to be an uplifting and memorable funeral/memorial for my father, Ken Barnes, at St Lawrence's Church, Hungerford, last Monday.  Many people came;  many were unable to.  Those who were able, gathered at The Bear Hotel afterwards to reminisce, have a look at his books, watch some very old video converted from cine film and generally catch up

I was only able to be around for a very short time on the 26th, owing to my dil being in hospital at short notice (baby OK, thank goodness).  Did get a few pictures though, and here they are! I went off with some friends to attend a talk by Kathleen Sage who deals in organza, plastic, machine embroidery and soldering irons.   I very nearly didn't go but was glad I did - the place was packed and she had a good slide show, a funny talk and very interesting pieces to show - jewellery, hangings, handbags, short jackets, enormous fans; kits and equipment to sell.  Have a look at her

My father is 80 today - Happy birthday Dad!  He had a birthday lunch last week and quite a few of us went to lunch at The Bear, Hungerford. While talking the other evening, Christine and Wilma were finding out about various quilting terms. Moda Bake Shop are part of Moda Fabrics.  They have patterns for quilts and other things and provide them free as ‘recipes’ using their pre-cut products.  Of course you can use them without pre-cuts, by cutting your own strips.  This page, The Bakery mentions their various cuts and at the bottom

ChrisJ and I visited the Meon Valley Quilters for their monthly meeting.  There were some smashing quilts at the show and tell, including a Mariners Compass made by someone who has only been quilting for a year, and a little bag made by what must be the youngest member – I think she is about 7? My uncle, (my father’s younger brother) died last Thursday.  A  release from a horribly tough year for him and his family.  Sadly, my father wasn’t able to get to the hospital in time, but was able to say his goodbyes.   It was good to see my aunt and some of my cousins, but such sad circumstances.  My thoughts and prayers are with them.   A time like this has made me realise I need to keep
